The Mount Lavinia Hotel came in to existence during the period when Sri Lanka was under the British rule. The Governor during that time Sir Thomas Maitland constructed his personal residence in Mount Lavinia. The legend says that he fell in love with a beautiful dancing girl named Lovinia. While the construction was going on at his residence the Governor made arrangements to build a secret tunnel to the girl’s house which was located nearby. Thus the tunnel was built where one corner was leading up to his wine cellar and the other corner ended up inside her house which was ideal for their secret rendezvous. However circumstances and his duties lead the Governor to leave the shores of Sri Lanka in 1806 leaving behind the romance which blossomed inside the tunnel. Thereafter he had died while still being a bachelor. The house was remained and renamed after his lover’s name much more years later and in 1947 The Mount Lavinia Hotel was re-established .
